Bible Topics: Bitterness

Definition: Holding on to or showing feelings of intense [strong] animosity [hatred, anger], resentment or vindictiveness [wanting to get back at someone]. -- Other words that describe bitterness are: merciless, unforgiving, holding a grudge. Bitterness is also described as feelings resulting from something that is difficult to accept.

1. God's Word warns us against the dangers of bitterness.

2. Do not carry or keep bitterness, but replace it with love, kindness and forgiveness.

3. If you allow bitterness a place in your heart, it will eventually come out of your mouth in murmuring and complaining.

4. The Lord, in His love, can deliver you from the sin of bitterness. Here are some examples of three who overcame it, and one who didn't:

5. Bitterness stems from feelings of anger and an unforgiving attitude towards others. Here are some more solutions from the Word on how to avoid it.

James Arendt

My name is James Arendt. I was raised in the Hegewisch neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois, served in the USAF from 1970 to 1974, and became a full-time missionary for Christ living 40 years in Japan, 3.5 years in Russia, and a few months in other countries such as Finland, Poland, Estonia, Latvia, South Korea, Taiwan and mainland China where I also served the King of Kings, Jesus, as an Ambassador for His Kingdom. My full bio.

On September 24, 2023, I had an accident and broke the bone of the tip of my left elbow. A boy ran in front of my motorbike less than 2 meters from me as I was leaving home. I stopped suddenly and my front tire slid on the sandy concrete road which caused me to fall. I did not hit the boy. On October 18th I had surgery done on my elbow. The doctor put in titanium rods to hold my bones together. The entire procedure including an entire week in the hospital was roughly $4000 USD. This was done in the Philippines where my wife and I have been living since June this year.

X-rays of bone before and after surgery that inserted titanium rods to reinforce my broken bone.

Before and after one week in the hospital.

Undergoing therapy to bend my arm again.
I'm now undergoing therapy to be able to bend my arm again.

It would be a super blessing to us if any of the visitors of this website can help us cover this expense!

Philip says...
was ahithopel bitter with David when he gave such bad advices.
Admin:
Ahithophel was of the conspirators who gave good advice to Absalom which was rejected. It doesn't say he was bitter against David, but he definitely made a bad chose to side with Absalom.

It is understood as scripture connects the dots, that Ahithophel is Bathsheba’s grandfather. That would mean that he had every right to be angry with David for forcing himself on his grand daughter and killing his grandson by marriage.
Ahithophel may have been sought after for his wisdom but his bitterness blind sided him from his own sin.
I’ve also wondered if he had pride in his ability to be wise counsel, and that’s why he was so angry when he was ignored.

I have been bless by this article. It was objective in that it gave the positive and negative outcome of bitterness. I can only contribute to your ministry by prayer so I am presently not earning an income. I pray that the mighty God will bless your ministry and bless you so much that it exceeds your expectation. Continue to be bless as you bless others in your ministry. Pray for me as well because I need the bitterness of soul that will cause my prayer to be answer. Keep up the work of your ... Read More
