Definition: The God-given ability to judge or discern correctly and to follow the best course of action, based on knowledge and understanding; learning and experience acquired over a period of time; ability to see beneath the surface of things.
1. Wisdom is an invaluable gift of God.
Proverbs 16:16 How much better is it to get wisdom than gold! And to get understanding rather to be chosen than silver!
Job 28:12-19 Where shall wisdom be found? And where is the place of understanding? 13 Man knoweth not the price thereof; neither is it found in the land of the living. 15 It cannot be gotten for gold, neither shall silver be weighed for the price thereof. 17 The gold and the crystal cannot equal it: and the exchange of it shall not be for jewels of fine gold.
Proverbs 3:13,14 Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding. 14 For the merchandise of it is better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold. [See also Pro:16:16.]
Proverbs 8:11 For wisdom is better than rubies; and all the things that may be desired are not to be compared to it.
2. Wisdom is one of the most important virtues in life.
Proverbs 4:7 Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.
Ecclesiastes 7:19 Wisdom strengtheneth the wise more than ten mighty men which are in the city.

Ecclesiastes 7:12 Wisdom giveth life to them that have it.
Isaiah 33:6 And wisdom and knowledge shall be the stability of thy times.
3. Wisdom -- or the lack of it -- can make the difference between success and failure, victory and defeat.
Proverbs 2:10-12 When wisdom entereth into thine heart, and knowledge is pleasant unto thy soul; 11 Discretion shall preserve thee, understanding shall keep thee: 12 To deliver thee from the way of the evil man, from the man that speaketh froward things.
Proverbs 3:21-23 My son, let not them depart from thine eyes: keep sound wisdom and discretion: 22 So shall they be life unto thy soul, and grace to thy neck. 23 Then shalt thou walk in thy way safely, and thy foot shall not stumble.
Proverbs 4:5,6 Get wisdom, get understanding: forget it not; neither decline from the words of my mouth. 6 Forsake her not, and she shall preserve thee: love her, and she shall keep thee.
Matthew 10:16 Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.
Ephesians 5:15,16 See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, 16 Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.
4. Wisdom begins with a fear (reverence, respect) of the Lord.
Proverbs 9:10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding. [See also Psalm 111:10a .]
Job 28:28 And unto man He said, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.

Proverbs 15:33a The fear of the Lord is the instruction of wisdom.
5. Wisdom is the ability to see matters as the Lord sees them, in order to judge them correctly.

1 Samuel 16:7b For the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart.
Proverbs 24:23 These things also belong to the wise. It is not good to have respect of persons in judgment.
Isaiah 55:8,9 For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways, saith the Lord. 9 For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts.
John 5:30 I can of Mine Own Self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and My judgment is just; because I seek not Mine Own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent Me.
John 8:15,16 Ye judge after the flesh; I judge no man. 16 And yet if I judge, My judgment is true: for I am not alone, but I and the Father that sent Me.
6. Wisdom is to rightly apply and then follow the Word of God. It is built upon a knowledge and understanding of God's Word.
Deuteronomy 4:5,6 Behold, I have taught you statutes and judgments, even as the Lord my God commanded me, that ye should do so in the land whither ye go to possess it. 6 Keep therefore and do them; for this is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the nations, which shall hear all these statutes, and say, Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.

7. We behave wisely when we prayerfully look to the Lord for guidance.

8. Wisdom is also gained through godly counsel, correction and instruction.

10. Wisdom is a gift of the Spirit, which we can receive by petitioning God.

Proverbs 2:1-6,9 My son, if thou wilt receive my words, and hide my commandments with thee; 2 So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding; 3 Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding; 4 If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures; 5 Then shalt thou understand the fear of the Lord, and find the knowledge of God. 6 For the Lord giveth wisdom: out of His mouth cometh knowledge and understanding. 9 Then shalt thou understand righteousness, and judgment, and equity; yea, every good path.
Proverbs 5:1,2 My son, attend unto My wisdom, and bow thine ear to My understanding: 2 That thou mayest regard discretion, and that thy lips may keep knowledge.

12. The Lord gives His wisdom to those who do not trust in their own.
1 Kings 3:7-12 [Solomon's prayer, when he became king:] And now, O Lord my God, Thou hast made thy servant king instead of David my father: and I am but a little child: I know not how to go out or come in. 8 And Thy servant is in the midst of Thy people which Thou hast chosen, a great people, that cannot be numbered nor counted for multitude. 9 Give therefore Thy servant an understanding heart to judge Thy people, that I may discern between good and bad: for who is able to judge this Thy so great a people? 10 And the speech pleased the Lord, that Solomon had asked this thing. 11 And God said unto him, Because thou hast asked this thing, and hast not asked for thyself long life; neither hast asked riches for thyself, nor hast asked the life of thine
enemies; but hast asked for thyself understanding to discern judgment; 12 Behold, I have done according to Thy Words: lo, I have given thee a wise and an understanding heart; so that there was none like thee before thee, neither after thee shall any arise like unto thee.

13. The wisdom of this world is not the wisdom of God.
1 Corinthians 3:18,19 Let no man deceive himself. If any man among you seemeth to be wise in this world, let him become a fool, that he may be wise. 19 For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness.

James 3:14-17 But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth. 15 This wisdom descendeth not from Above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish.
14. Wisdom and obedience to God go hand in hand.
Psalm 111:10b A good understanding have all they that do His commandments.

Ecclesiastes 2:26a For God giveth to a man that is good in His sight [obedient to Him] wisdom, and knowledge, and joy. [See also 2 Timothy 1:13,14 .]
15. The common sense that the Lord gives about practical matters is also a part of His gift of wisdom.
Job 32:8 But there is a spirit in man: and the inspiration of the Almighty giveth them understanding
Exodus 31:1-6 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying, 2 See, I have called by name Bezaleel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah: 3 And I have filled him with the Spirit of God, in wisdom, and in understanding, and in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship, 4 To devise cunning works, to work in gold, and in silver, and in brass, 5 And in cutting of stones, to set them, and in carving of timber, to work in all manner of workmanship. 6 And I, behold, I have given with him Aholiab, the son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan: and in the hearts of all that are wise hearted I have put wisdom, that they may make all that I have commanded thee. [See also Exodus 36:2 .]
16. It's wise to be prayerful and cautious.

Proverbs 11:30 The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that winneth souls is wise.
