Genesis Chapter 11: "And the whole Earth was of one language, and of one speech. And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the East, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there. And they said one to another, Go to, let us make brick, and burn them thoroughly. And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for mortar. And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto Heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad, upon the face of the whole Earth."--Which they eventually were, I guess.) That's right.
They knew they could become very powerful if they were all united and spoke the same language. (Techi: So was that language Hebrew or what?) We don't know, Honey. (Techi: Maybe it was even English.) (David: It was probably related to one of the dialects we have now in the Earth, right?) Possibly.
(Verse 5: "And the Lord came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded."--Ha, that sounds funny, "The Lord came down to see it!" Verse 6: "And the Lord said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do.") They were big and powerful.--Like the Antichrist government. (Techi: "Nothing will be restrained from them!")
(Verse 7, "Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another's speech. So the Lord scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the Earth: and they left off to build the city. Therefore is the name of it called Babel; because the Lord did there confound the language of all the Earth.") The word "Babel" here, by the way, means confusion. (David: "And from thence did the Lord scatter them abroad upon the face of all the Earth.")
(Techi: Since they couldn't speak the same language, they moved out--is that what it means by "scattered abroad"?) Yes. Can you imagine working with some workmen and you both speak different languages and you can't even understand each other? How is the boss going to tell the workers what to do? It completely ruined their building. They couldn't understand each other and they couldn't get along with each other any more.
It's one of the best things that ever happened to the World, believe it or not!--Otherwise there would have been a huge anti-God nation of the whole World much sooner. (Techi: Couldn't they have been for God though?) No, they weren't. The very fact that they were building the tower was in defiance of the Lord. (Techi: To reach the heavens.) Yes! They wanted to be like gods.
My name is James Arendt. I was raised in the Hegewisch neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois, served in the USAF from 1970 to 1974, and became a full-time missionary for Christ living 40 years in Japan, 3.5 years in Russia, and a few months in other countries such as Finland, Poland, Estonia, Latvia, South Korea, Taiwan and mainland China where I also served the King of Kings, Jesus, as an Ambassador for His Kingdom. My full bio.
On September 24, 2023, I had an accident and broke the bone of the tip of my left elbow. A boy ran in front of my motorbike less than 2 meters from me as I was leaving home. I stopped suddenly and my front tire slid on the sandy concrete road which caused me to fall. I did not hit the boy. On October 18th I had surgery done on my elbow. The doctor put in titanium rods to hold my bones together. The entire procedure including an entire week in the hospital was roughly $4000 USD. This was done in the Philippines where my wife and I have been living since June this year.
