When Will Jesus Return?

- By David Brandt Berg
Jesus returning on a white horse!

Matthew chapter 24 is quite clear on the subject of Jesus' Second Coming, when He is going to return to gather all those who have received Him as their Savior and take them with Him back to Heaven - an event commonly referred to as "the Rapture." The rest of the Bible is also clear on when this happens. That's why for nearly 1,800 years practically every Christian believed Jesus would come back after the period He refers to as "Great Tribulation" - three and a half years of intense persecution.

It's only in the last couple of hundred years that people like C.I. Scofield (1843-1921) came along with the false doctrine that Jesus would come before the Tribulation. "Don't worry, Jesus is going to come and take you out of this world before the trouble comes, so you won't have to suffer." Naturally that became a very popular doctrine because it was just what everybody had been waiting to hear.

When does Jesus come back for us? - That's also plain as day: "Immediately after the tribulation of those days" Jesus returns (Matthew 24:29). Jesus doesn't say that when we see the abomination of desolation standing in the holy place He's about to rescue us out of this world, away from the Antichrist and the trouble to come. He warns us to head for the hills (Matthew 24:16). In other words, we will still be here.

And why did the Lord and the prophets go to so much trouble to tell us exactly how long the Great Tribulation would last - the exact time in terms of days, months, and years - if we didn't need to know these things, if we won't be here, counting the days and the weeks? (Daniel 7:25; 12:11; Revelation 13:5). Jesus told us these specifics because He wants us to be able to take heart in knowing that the Tribulation isn't going to last forever, and that every passing day is bringing us closer to the glorious end.

During the Tribulation, things will get so bad that many people will think it's time for Jesus to come, especially Christians who were taught that He was supposed to come before the Tribulation. They're going to expect Him to come any day. But Jesus warns us not to expect Him sooner than has been foretold. He also warns us to not be deceived by either false christs who will try to deceive us into thinking that they are Christ, or by false prophets who will try to tell us that Christ's coming is imminent or that He's already here somewhere (Matthew 24:23-26). He tells us to not believe any of them, because when He comes, we will know it!

Some people who teach a pre-Tribulation Rapture go so far as to say that it's going to be a secret Rapture - that nobody is going to see Him except the saved. Nobody else is even going to know He came. All of a sudden a bunch of us are just going to disappear, and those who are left behind won't know what's happened to us.

From my experience, many Christians who say they believe in the pre-Tribulation Rapture just don't want to have to go through the Tribulation and aren't the least bit prepared for it, so they come up with their own interpretation of the Scriptures or latch onto someone else's false teaching. But the Bible specifically says not to do that. "No prophecy of the Scripture is of any private interpretation" (2 Peter 1:20). I don't care what other religious groups or other Christians say; what does the Bible say?

In Matthew 24, Jesus' disciples ask Him what will be the sign of His return, and Jesus answers with not one but a number of signs - wars, famines, pestilences, earthquakes, persecution of Christians, a proliferation of false prophets, lawlessness, a pervading lack of love, and the Gospel being preached in every nation. "Then," He says, "the end will come" (Matthew 24:4-14).

Beginning with the next verse, Jesus tells us what we can expect during the Great Tribulation - the last three and a half years leading up to His return, which is also the last half of the Antichrist's reign. Jesus also tells us what specific sign to watch for, so we'll know exactly when that period is beginning. "When you see the 'abomination of desolation,' spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place ... then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until this time, no, nor ever shall be" (Matthew 24:15,21). We find out in the book of Revelation that this "abomination of desolation" is an image of the Antichrist, or Beast (Revelation 13:14-15). Both Daniel and Revelation tell us that this image will be set up in the holy place at exactly the middle of the Antichrist's seven-year reign (Daniel 9:27; 12:11; Matthew 24:15-21; Revelation 13:5).

If the Rapture is supposed to be a secret, why will the Lord make so much noise and put on such a show when He comes? His Word tells us that He's going to "come in the clouds with great power and glory." The sky will light up from one end to the other, and there will be such signs in the heavens that we couldn't possibly mistake the fact that Jesus is coming. In fact, it says that "every eye shall see Him." Everyone will also see the dead in Christ - all the saved people who have already died - rising to meet Him in the air as He comes. They'll hear Jesus, too, because He'll "descend from Heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and a great sound of the trump of God." And why are all of the unsaved going to mourn? - Because they're going to see and know what's happening (Matthew 24:27,30; "Acts 1:9-11; 1 Thessalonians 4:16; Revelation 1:7). It will be the greatest spectacle the world has ever seen.

That doesn't sound like a secret coming or secret Rapture to me! Does it to you?

And there it is again, plain as day: After the dead rise to meet the Lord, "then we who are alive and remain will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air" (1 Thessalonians 4:17). If we got raptured before, then what are we doing still here?

November 14 may be the Second Coming of God the Lord Jesus Christ and the end of the world. Genesis 6 & 7 as well as Daniel 10 help us here. May 21 was the end of all salvation worldwide and October 21 was the end of Revelation 9's five months. Daniel 10 may be taking us just past three weeks beyond October 20. There will be a rapture.

"Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh" (Matthew 24:44).

In a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed.(1 Corinthians 15:52)

“And to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, even Jesus, which delivered us from the wrath to come.” (1 Thessalonians 1:10)
Yes, there will be a rapture, after the tribulation.

29  Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken:
30  And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.
31  And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.

"Yes, there will be a rapture, after the tribulation". delusional is the word. Matt 29 is about Israel and their tribulation, which it is not "the great tribulation" or the "wrath of God". what is the rapture going to accomplish if there is hardly anybody alive?
Peter, you prove nothing to me from Scripture but are merely giving an opinion based on some preacher you heard. Matthew 24 is referring to "great tribulation"

Matthew 24:21  For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.

That means world wide tribulation. It fits perfectly with the verse in Revelation.

Revelation 7:14  And I said unto him, Sir, thou knowest. And he said to me, These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.

Who, pray tell, is the ":they" that came out of great tribulation? CHRISTIANS!!!

Obviously not every Christian will die during the Great Tribulation. We don't know the percentage of who will remain till the rapture, but some will according to the Word of God.

Can the great tribulation be any worse for those Christians suffering in Iraq and Syria today? NO! It's called "great" because it eventually will be world wide. Did God rapture the Christians dying in the mid east? Not yet.

I suggest you base your ideas on the Word of God or you are the one who is deluded, not me.

The devil will do this by at least one or more of the following ways: he will try to get you to deny Jesus, and/or he will try to get you to blasphemy the Holy Spirit, and/or convince you to take the mark of the beast. If you do any one of the above 3 things the bible says it will cause you to lose your salvation. ... Read More

What about the second half of the 3.5 years?

Webmaster James (Japan) says...
Of the seven years when Jesus confirmed the Covenant of Grace with Abraham, the first 3.5 years was during His bodily ministry on earth, and the second 3.5 was the ministry of the Apostles up till the time of the stoning of Stephen. It was then when the 7 years ended. It was largely a ministry to the Jews. After that Paul got converted and started to preach the Gospel to the Gentiles. It has actually been less than a year that I have understood Daniel 9:27 in this light. It was the ... Read More

MK (Murphy, US) says...
Why would you celebrate the Passover? Are you a Jew living under the law? It was a sign to the Jews of the coming Messiah. It's not a bad thing to have a seder, but why would you? If you're saved by Christ you would be celebrating Resurrection Sunday, minus the chocolate bunnies, colorful eggs and calling it Easter, the Catholic name for one of their false gods. "Most reference books say that the name “Easter” derived from the Eastre, the Teutonic goddess of Spring. Although ... Read More

I am not a Jew by race. No. I do not have anything to do with Easter. I would like to ask you, what do you mean by the Passover was a sign to the Jews of the coming Messiah? I did not say 'celebrate' the Passover. I said 'keep' the Passover. I think people spend too much time telling, instead of asking. If people ask questions they might learn. I am replying to you because you started your reply by asking me: "Why would you keep (corrected) the Passover." The rest of ... Read More

I know there's no rapture. I just worry so much about the children and the animals. I hate this god-forsaken, Christ-mocking, Christ-ignoring world so much. My daily prayer is "Please, Lord, for the sake of the animals and children, Please come quickly. PLEASE!
In Jesus name. It's all so depressing.

Great blog and totally Biblical! Everyone might enjoy reading "Famous Rapture Watchers" on Joe Ortiz' "End Times Passover" blog of May 5, 2014. It reveals the "rapture" view of the greatest Bible scholars of all time before 1830 - and, no, it was NOT the pretrib view !

I have a ? The tribulation starts with the Antichrist signing a peace treaty with Israel for seven years, correct? So if tomorrow we are watching cnn and we see the AC signing a peace treaty with Israel couldn't when then count down the days of His return beginning with the signing of the peace treaty. But then in Matt. 24:36 we are told we don't know the day or the hour of His return. And we are told that Jesus returns immediately after the tribulation Matt. 24:30.
Yes, you got it correct that Jesus comes 7 years after the AC peace treaty.

Who was Jesus talking to in Matthew 24? His disciples. THEY surely didn't know the hour of His return for they were not living in the time when the AC peace treaty will be signed! But that is not to say we -- the people of this generation on earth -- cannot know approximently when I will return. We may not know the HOUR, and we may not know the exact DAY, but perhaps we can know the approximent WEEK or at least MONTH!! For sure we will know the year:-)

Brothers, and not fear death during the tribulation. If we die, it will seem like a second before Jesus brings us back to life. This time, and that time will fall into the past. True none of us want pain, but the world will do what they will do. We have nothing to fear. It will all pass. But take warning; do not take the mark of the beast. I don;t know what the mark will be, but I think it may be a computer chip under the skin. Those with the chip can buy, and sell. Those in ... Read More

Well I kept studying the Revelation and think that the rapture is mentioned in Revelation 7: 9-17 (the great multitude in white robes)

God bless
Dear Heidi, I think it is very important to use Scripture to interpret other Scripture. You say that Revelation 7:14 which says "These are they which came out of great tribulation" teaches the Rapture. The Bible also says in Revelation 1:9 I, John, who also am your brother, and companion in tribulation..." The fact is tribulation, meaning persecution, and slaying of Christians, has existed from the time of Stephen the first martyr to this very day. I wonder what the families of those Christians martyred in Iraq and other Islamic countries think of the doctrine of pre-tribulation rapture? I venture to say coming out of great tribulaton means that is how they, the martyrs, were killed.

Thank you so much for all of this information and blog. I used to be pre-trib, but when I started reading my Bible without the commentary, the Holy Spirit took me to 2nd Thes. From there, I began to study the Bible for Truth - not what man believes, but what God says in His Word. Hopefully, we post-tribbers can help those pre-tribbers when they realize they are still here after the 7-year peace treaty is signed. Love you ALL.

Why are Christians worried about being saved? God created us to serve him…that is what we should be doing. If we are given life, or death…you can be sure Gods decision to do either will be the right choice. Don’t serve God for life…serve him because your heart will not let you stop serving him.

The Bible did not tell us the rapture would be after the great tribulation. Jesus promised to come back to translate his own to be with him. John14:1-3. He also explained the rapture asan instantaneous translation of those living in Christ and the dead in Christ. He said two shall be on the field. One taken and the other left. Matthew 24:40-42. This is not the second coming but the rapture of the saints for the marriage supper of the lamb in heaven. This is the next event in the prophetic plan ... Read More
Rapael, you are confusing the Wrath of God with the Great Tribulation. They are two different events. The Wrath of God comes on the wicked at the very end of 3.5 years of persecution AFTER Jesus takes us up in the air to be with Him. The Great Tribulationj is a 3.5 year period of persecution of the SAINTS by the wicked! This is why God will pour out his wrath on them!

His elect are the people that stood for Jesus through the great tribulation I believe you are confusing the rapture of the church from the departing of the tribulation saints. Those that endure for Christ through the tribulation will be given special crowns. But those of us who have belonged to Jesus beforehand will not have to endure it.
"His elect are the people that stood for Jesus through the great tribulation"??? My Bible tells me that God's elect are all of the believers in Christ Jesus!

Luke 18:7  And shall not God avenge his own elect, which cry day and night unto him, though he bear long with them?
Romans 8:33  Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God's elect? It is God that justifieth.
Colossians 3:12  ¶Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering;
1 Timothy 5:21  I charge thee before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, and the elect angels, that thou observe these things without preferring one before another, doing nothing by partiality.
Titus 1:1  ¶Paul, a servant of God, and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God's elect, and the acknowledging of the truth which is after godliness;
1 Peter 1:2  Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied.
1 Peter 2:6  Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded.
